Complex PTSD: Follow My Map to Healing
A Clinician’s First Hand Account of the Path to Recovery
Complex PTSD can leave us believing that our deepest struggles reflect something fundamentally wrong with who we are. This book explores how repeated trauma involving invalidation, abuse, and neglect can lead to internalized, painful beliefs about identity and self-worth. But I don't stop there! I provide a step-by-step guide on how those beliefs, and associated emotions and behaviors, can change. C-PTSD is still under-recognized and misunderstood by many, and I want to share that there is so much hope for anyone suffering with this mental health disorder.
Drawing from clinical work, lived experience, and trauma-informed frameworks, I offer a map for understanding how and why shame forms in some dysfunctional homes and how to break down the experience of Complex PTSD into a logical set of concepts that, when strung together, provide insight into every step needed to heal. As a clinical specialist in the treatment of C-PTSD, I provide a comprehensive guide on the various ways C-PTSD can impact us - isolation/fear of connection, addiction, disordered eating, low self-worth, and suicide are all themes incorporated in my book.
I incorporate Internal Family Systems, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and concepts from various experts on trauma and healing. This synthesis is how I approach therapy with my clients, and I get results. Because I have such profound, yet harrowing, experience of living with C-PTSD, I have a unique ability to understand how my clients feel and what they need.
A gentle warning: This book is a true account of how I began as a victim of abuse and how I gradually discovered the path to healing through a synthesis of various trauma treatment modalities and concepts. While each chapter is contained with psychoeducation at the close of each chapter, the book does include many lived experiences of trauma. If you are in the beginning stages of healing, the containment I provide with psychoeducation may not be adequate. My suggestion would be view the list of recommended books here if you need to start with something less intense. This book is meant to help individuals reflect on how they relate to my lived experience and the concepts I present as a guide to healing. In other words, I share openly about the more painful parts of my story, including stages of my life where I was treated poorly and stages when I was acting poorly. This is not to sensationalize, but to make the process of healing visible and authentic.
