Video: Emotional Flashbacks Are a Common Symptom of Complex PTSD
Emotional flashbacks occur when we are triggered by something the present that sends us back to an emotional state of shame from childhood.
A very common symptom of Complex PTSD is an emotional flashback. This occurs when an adult with unresolved internalized shame from childhood is triggered into feeling the old, overwhelming feeling of shame. While in this emotional state, the individual tries to distract, which can involve abusing substances, isolating, self-harming, or other regrettable behaviors. When the person calms down from the flashback, they feel even more shame and lack of self-trust about how they have behaved.
